The duodenum is the central organ of digestion, since the process of digesting food takes place mainly in two parts – the stomach and duodenum. The most common diseases of the duodenum are duodenitis (inflammation of the mucous membrane) and duodenal ulcer (the appearance of defects on the wall of the duodenum).
Problems with the duodenum can appear as early as childhood, in preschool age and in elementary school. Most often, the development of duodenitis can be provoked by improper nutrition (spicy, sour food, strong tea, coffee, dry food, fast food), alcohol, stress, parasitic and helminthic invasions. If duodenitis is not treated, a duodenal ulcer may develop. Duodenal ulcer is dangerous because of its complications – bleeding can open or perforate the intestinal wall. These complications can even be fatal.
It is essential to carry out regular preventive measures to prevent relapse or life-threatening complications.
